UAL Level 2 Week 3- September 2016
UAL Level 2 Week 3- September 2016
On Monday 26th September:
Blog Lesson: We begin writing in the blogs about what we have done in the previously days.
Acting Lesson: We started the class with our groups. Rob gave us a box with two little papers and each group had to pick one paper. My group pick The Waiting Room and the other group, The School. After, each group had to create a scene.
On Tuesday 27th September :
Acting Lesson: First we started the class lining the chairs up against the wall and everyone had to write what does Identity meant to us, we then swapped to the person next to us and had to read them all out. Later on, we get back in the groups we were in lat time, one group went out to the other class to practice the School scene. meanwhile we stay in the class practicing with our groups.
Movement Lesson: At the start of the class we had to choose a partner that we wanted to portray then move, as if we were them, our partner had to try and replicate our chosen character as best to their ability, for example: me and my partner had to choose a famous character, and we had to move as if we were that person. We moved onto various stretching exercises allowing us to improve flexibility and more easy movement skills.
Production Lesson: We worked in groups at themes of Fairness and Prejudice. We looked at a presentation which made us look at different people in order to see who got the role as the Engineer. Before being allowed to choose who we want, we had to look thought each different aspect of their personality and make an unprejudiced decision about firing each one based of who they are but also what they could offer to the job, for example someone was bisexual but had no engineering history whereas they had a competitor who was transsexual but had a history of engineering so was the better choice for the job.
On Thursday 29th September:
Acting lesson. We began working on our acting piece called 'Identity'. It started with the chairs being lined up in the centre on the theatre, then people had to speak out about what identity meant to them, but when it got to me I had to say "Identity is me, can't you see, me" but I had to say it in Spanish which helped to promote cultural diversity which links into our piece as it is all about equality between people. We then moved on to setting out the chairs and tables to the correct placement that we would act out the scenes for the audience. My group and I acted out our work after seeing the first groups' scene, our scene started off by having my group in the 'waiting room' for the house letting agency, Dylan was the first to stand up and go over to Brad who was playing the part Housing Agent, he acted as a rich teenager who had been thrown out of his house by his father. He acted as if he didn't care about anything as when he was asking about the re-housing, he was on his phone not paying attention and then he took a picture with the agent, the person then looked at Dylan as if he was crazy. After finding a suitable place , Dylan was disgusted that the housing agent had offered him a flat after coming from such a rich background. After telling him that was all they could offer, he then bribed the housing agent who then took a second glance at the housing book and found a luxurious 4 bedroom house in Cricklewood. Soon, after Dylan left another person came up looking for a house, but after looking at his demeanor, the housing agent, regardless of the person's situation.
On Friday 30th September:
Blog Lesson. We spent the whole class typing in our blogs and editing. Then, we got Acting Lesson. We continue practicing the play Identity, we add more things to it and make sure everything it's perfect.
UAL Level 2 Week 4- October 2016
Blog Lesson: We focused typing in our blogs. Later on, all the class did an activity. We looked at different rights and conventions of the European Union and had to pick 4 which stood out most to us as a drama group. Previously, we had to get into groups of five and pick four rights out of 12 which meant the most to us as a group. After, we have to explain all the reasons for why we chose those rights, For Example: choosing the Right To Liberty was good because as a group we all believed in the right to have our own personal well being safe guarded and protected by overpowering bodies such as the government and the want to feel secure as a person. In my opinion doing those activities is very good because we know each other better in the class.
Acting Lesson: We went through the theater further developing the play 'Identity'. We worked on the beginning of the play until the end. At the start of the play we decided to have us all speak about what identity meant to us, but ten, we prefer to shortened it down to people who took ideas from other people as well as themselves. A few minutes later, we focused more on The School scene, the part of the detention by looking more at actor placement on stage and the position the scenes will mainly be directed at the audience. Then, we worked more on the further development of the scenes at the end when The Housing scene is happening, we did this: A foreign person comes in looking for a house, the housing agent who is racist tells her to go away as she does not want the likes of her in the country. The foreign person looks toward the audience and says "Soy humano no menos" that means "I'm a human none the less", After that, the whole group come and speak that line in different languages, for example: Spanish, German, Italian and French and they keep repeating 3 times slowly and with authority.
This is my favorite scene as a this helps the audience understand about the individuality, fairness and an insight to the possible abuse that certain foreign people may get when they going somewhere looking for help.
Tuesday 4th October:
Acting lesson: Keep on practicing out the production of Identity, we were repeating the scenes repeatedly, whilst making some improvement to various different things such as movement, voice exaggeration and gestures. Overall we decided that it would be better if we over exaggerated the whole of the play as before it was basic and too naturalistic so it needed something else to create emphasis and to excite the audience all the way throughout.
Later on, Level 3 second year students, came in to the theater and we had to perform what we have done to them. Doing this was extremely useful because they have more experience acting, so they can help us to improve things and add more staff to it. They also gave us a lot of things that we could improve on things like certain people in the group were not acting as if they were a character they were playing as if they were just reading lines from a book.
Upon hearing this, made us think that every time we have to perform we have to be more into the character.
Movement lesson: At the start of the class, we began to incorporate themes of musical theater in our production which allows us to develop and build more on our gestures and body movements and gestures towards the audience while the play is going on, for example, we looked at the scene where we show the audience the sexist stereotypical views on the male and female gender such as make-up for girls and football for boys. We worked on these by adding better movements to signalize the different stereotypes and how to better link them with what we are trying to show the audience. Then, After this, we did multiple run through with changes to the whole performance base on the new movement actions and gestures we created in the movement lesson.
Production Lesson: Went trough further develop our essay about our certain roles in the theater.
Thursday 6th October
Acting Lesson: On Thursday we worked in a different room 226, (drama room) focusing on improving the performing Identity. In my opinion, I think it would be better if we were working in the theater, because that room was too small, so we did not have the space to put the chair lay out with all the scene movements as the space was very tight.
Then, after practicing the scenes few times, we were able to work on the ending scenes such as the housing agent scene, what we do were improve the bodily movements, language and spacing in relation to the audience, further, we had to fill in for a person because they weren't in which was good as it allowed us to continue working without problems.
Friday 7th October
Acting Lesson: We did the same as the day before. Work on our Identity piece in a different room 222. This room was bigger than the other one, so we had more space to work the scene for the layout of the chairs to be placed. Also, we were allow to improve on our work. Which makes it better and more cleaner when we actually performs it to the audience. After we were talking about how we are gonna organized everything for the day of the performance.
UAL Level 2 Week 5- October 2016
Blog session: Just started the lesson where we carried on working and updating our blogs with Rebbecca. We spent the whole class doing the same.
Acting Lesson: Soon, after we he had class with Rob. In the class we just reviewed the things that we looked at in our previous tutorial lessons and completed a test consolidating our new knowledge on the subjects.
Tuesday 11th October
Acting Lesson: Had a lesson with Rob where we improve the play Identity in the theater, as we are doing in these last week. Then, we moved the chairs on stage and Rob teach us a few games. One of the games called The Expert, was made to use placement and body language on stage. During this game there was an expert on a topic who spoke in a made-up and a translator who had to work with the expert and look at the body language in order to give replies. Then, we played another game in which we were not allowed to say 'Yes' or 'No'. Basically, we had to reply to the person in the best possible way as the same as try and survive for one minute.
Movement Lesson: In this lesson we didn't do dance because the teacher wanted to see the play and the guys of musical theater were there so we used concepts from musical to make certain parts more extravagant and less naturalistic which is what was wanted from the acting teacher. Then, after the teacher sees the play, she advice us what we had to improve. I think that helped us a lot, because we could change change some mistakes that we had made.
Production Lesson: In production classes we had been talking about the types of violence we can find about physical, psychological, bullying and more. We did a discussion where everyone has to give it opinion and identify which kind of violence at the board.
Thursday 13th October
Acting Lesson: We have been practising for the final touching of the presentation, making sure that every single details was perfect, since we have only one left for the presentation, so we have to make sure that we don't miss anything.
Friday 14th October
- On this day we finally acted our performance on Identity for member of the college: Level 3 Performing Arts class, Level 2 and level 3 Music class. It was amazing for all the people in the team who performed because we spent a really long time practicing for this. We engaged the public during the whole play giving the best of us. This makes me think that they really enjoy every second of the play. After this,we watched a range of musicals; their voices were really powerful and incredible. I really appreciate every single moment, it was amazing.
The Identity Project
Artistic and Technical Targets:
One of my main targets was to learn how to develop new skills to increase my self-confidence by handling what I do, fulfill my responsibilities at 100% and more.Another target was being able to get into the character as every character requires different abilities for instants. The character I play had to focus on the tone of voice and non-verbal communication: Body language and facial expression.
My third and last target was being able to improvise, this is essential to perform in stage because every minute counts. It's a way to show cooperation to one to another.
Devising Process Issues:
There were a couple of issues while devising the scenes, this was because all the group had to pick what scene actually do as the overall part in the play, for example: some members of my group and I had various different ideas about what to do or the principal piece at the start of the whole project and as we acted out each little idea we decided which one would best display the idea of the play Identity to the audience and we ended up choosing school and background.
Our Strengths and Weaknesses:
My strengths in this play were:
- Our tone of voice as I am bilingual (I can speak Spanish and English) because the character that I had needed to have an accent of another country. Also, when I stood up I had to talk in Spanish and had to say 'soy humana no menos'. So that was easy for me because I speak Spanish.
- The use of space and movement was effective as I had to be aware of the equipment around in order to get the best positions and gestures to get a good body language.
- I hesitate when I was speaking as while I was speaking I would not take care of my tone when I was delivering my lines.
- As a character, my visual contact was not good as I felt nervous during the part when I stood up and said my lines.
- Another weaknesses during the play was my facial expression as at times I would not support it with the lines. For example, when I had to be angry, I smiled a bit instead of getting angry.
For me the play had been really good, we were quiet focus in what we did trying do a good interpretation. However, the engagement was not the best because some people arrived late or did not come and during the practices some people did not take it seriously. I think the audience liked the play because after the play all of us got congratulations from members of the audience and teachers. In technical aspects, I can say that everything was very organized, clean and we did what we expected to do on that day.
